Naxxar Residents Return Home After Wall Collapse
Naxxar Residents Return Home After Collapse Scare
In the quiet, tree-lined streets of Naxxar, a sense of relief and normality is returning. Just a week ago, residents were evacuated from their homes, their lives upended by the sudden collapse of a retaining wall. But today, they’re back, picking up the pieces and rebuilding their community.
Wall Collapse Forces Evacuation
It was a scene straight out of a disaster movie. On a balmy Tuesday evening, a retaining wall along Triq il-Kbira, Naxxar’s main street, suddenly gave way, sending a cascade of earth and debris onto the road below. Cars were crushed, and nearby homes shook as if in an earthquake. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, but the damage was extensive, and around 150 residents were forced to evacuate their homes.
“I was in my living room when I heard this deafening roar,” recalls Maria Grech, a Naxxar resident. “I looked out my window and saw the wall coming down. It was terrifying.”
Community United in Crisis
In the aftermath of the collapse, the Naxxar community came together. Residents opened their homes to those evacuated, while others volunteered to help with the clean-up. The local council worked tirelessly, coordinating with the Armed Forces of Malta and other agencies to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing.
“We’re a close-knit community,” says Naxxar Mayor Dorisleane Galea. “When something like this happens, we don’t hesitate to support each other.”
Repairs Begin, Residents Return
With the affected area declared safe, residents are now returning to their homes. Repairs are underway, with the local council working to restore the retaining wall and fix any damage to properties. It’s a slow process, but the community is determined to bounce back.
“It’s a relief to be back home,” says Grech. “But we’re all aware that this could have been much worse. We’re grateful for the support we’ve received, and we’re looking forward to putting this behind us.”
As Naxxar residents pick up the pieces, they do so with a renewed sense of community and resilience. They’ve weathered the storm, and they’re ready to move forward.
“Naxxar is more than just a place on the map,” says Mayor Galea. “It’s a community of people who care for each other. And that’s what makes us strong.”
