Rabat’s Historic Facelift: St Paul’s Belfry and Streets Get a Makeover

Ever strolled through Rabat’s winding streets, looked up at the towering belfry of St Paul’s Basilica, and wondered what it would take to bring that historic gem back to its former glory? Well, wonder no more. The local council has just announced plans to give Rabat’s most iconic landmark, along with its surrounding streets, a much-needed facelift.

Reviving a Piece of History: St Paul’s Belfry

Standing tall and proud since the 17th century, St Paul’s Basilica belfry has been a silent sentinel overlooking Rabat’s skyline. But time, as they say, takes its toll. The belfry’s once resplendent bell towers have faded, and its walls bear the marks of age. That’s all about to change, thanks to a €1.5 million restoration project.

The plan, spearheaded by Rabat Local Council, involves meticulous cleaning and restoration work, including the reinstallation of the original bells. “We want to revive the belfry’s grandeur,” says Mayor Mario Fava. “Imagine hearing those bells ring out again, echoing through Rabat’s streets. It’s going to be a breakthrough for our town’s atmosphere.”

Transforming Rabat’s Streetscape

But the restoration doesn’t stop at the belfry. The project extends to Rabat’s historic streets, with plans to revamp the area around St Paul’s Square. Think new paving, improved lighting, and greenery galore. “We want to create a welcoming, vibrant space for residents and visitors alike,” explains Fava.

Triq San Pawl, the bustling street leading up to the basilica, will also get a makeover. Shops will benefit from improved facades, and the street will be pedestrianized, making it safer and more enjoyable for passersby. “We’re transforming Triq San Pawl into a pedestrian street, with more space for outdoor seating and greenery,” says Fava.

Community Engagement: Your Say Matters

But before the bulldozers move in, Rabat Local Council wants to hear from you. They’re inviting residents, business owners, and anyone with a stake in Rabat’s future to share their ideas and concerns. “This is your chance to shape Rabat’s future,” says Fava. “We want to create a space that truly reflects our community’s identity and aspirations.”

So, what are you waiting for? Mark your calendars for the upcoming public consultation meetings. Your voice could be the missing piece in Rabat’s historic puzzle.
