Rabat’s St Paul’s Basilica Belfry to Ring Loud Again
Bells to Ring Louder: Rabat’s St Paul’s Basilica Belfry Restoration Begins
Imagine standing at the foot of Triq San Pawl, Rabat’s bustling main street, and hearing the bells of St Paul’s Basilica ring out clear and strong. For too long, the once-resounding peals have been muted, their echoes dampened by time and wear. But change is in the air, and soon, the belfry will sing again.
Unveiling a Hidden Gem
Tucked away in the heart of Rabat, St Paul’s Basilica is a treasure often overlooked by tourists rushing to its more famous neighbour, Mdina. Yet, this 17th-century gem, with its grand Baroque facade and rich history, deserves a closer look. And soon, it will be easier to do just that.
In a move that will transform not just the basilica, but the entire Rabat streetscape, the Restoration Committee of St Paul’s Basilica has embarked on a comprehensive restoration project. The belfry, which has fallen silent due to structural issues, will be the first to receive attention.
From Bells to Streets: A Comprehensive Revamp
The belfry restoration is just the beginning. The project, funded by the Heritage Malta agency, will also see the repaving of the streets surrounding the basilica. The narrow, uneven streets that have borne the weight of centuries will be given a new lease of life, making them safer and more accessible for all.
But it’s not just about aesthetics. The restoration will also uncover the basilica’s rich history. “We want to bring back the grandeur of the past,” says Dr. Mario Buhagiar, the project’s coordinator. “The basilica was once the heart of Rabat. We want to restore it to its former glory, and make it a focal point once again.”
And the benefits won’t be limited to Rabat. With improved access and a renewed sense of pride, the basilica could become a must-visit destination, drawing more visitors to the area and boosting local tourism.
: A New Sound for Rabat
The belfry restoration is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Once the bells ring out again, it will be a symbol of Rabat’s rebirth. “We can’t wait to hear the bells ring out again,” says Josephine Borg, a Rabat resident. “It will be a new sound for our town, a sound of hope and renewal.”
So, mark your calendars. Soon, the bells of St Paul’s Basilica will ring out loud and clear, heralding a new era for Rabat. And when they do, you’ll know that the heart of Rabat is beating strong once more.
