Rabat’s Bell Tower to Ring Again: St Paul’s Basilica Belfry Restoration Begins
Imagine strolling through the quaint, winding streets of Rabat, the sun casting a warm glow on the honey-coloured limestone buildings. Suddenly, the silence is broken by the resonant tolling of a bell, echoing through the narrow alleys and out into the open fields beyond. This is not a scene from a historical film, but a vision of Rabat’s future, thanks to the upcoming restoration of St Paul’s Basilica belfry.
Reviving a Silenced Icon
For decades, the bell tower of St Paul’s Basilica has stood silent, its once-proud bells fallen into disrepair. This iconic landmark, towering over the heart of Rabat, has been a silent sentinel, its voice lost to the ravages of time. But all that is set to change. The Basilica’s administration has announced a comprehensive restoration project, with the belfry as its focal point.
“We’re not just restoring a structure,” says Father Mark Sultana, the Basilica’s administrator. “We’re reviving a symbol of Rabat’s history and identity. The bells have been silent for too long. It’s time for them to ring again.”
More Than Just a Facelift
The restoration project, set to begin later this year, is no mere facelift. It’s a comprehensive overhaul that includes structural repairs, the replacement of worn-out materials, and the installation of new, state-of-the-art bells. But the project doesn’t stop at the belfry. The streets surrounding the Basilica, many of which are in dire need of repair, will also be repaved.
“We want to create a welcoming, safe space for both locals and tourists,” says Father Sultana. “The Basilica is a gem, but it’s the streets that tell the story of Rabat’s everyday life. We want to make sure that story is told with pride.”
The project, funded in part by the Malta Tourism Authority, is expected to take around 18 months to complete. During this time, the Basilica will remain open to the public, with services and visits continuing as normal.
Once completed, the restored belfry will not only serve as a symbol of Rabat’s rich history but also as a testament to the community’s commitment to preserving its past while looking towards the future.
So, the next time you find yourself in Rabat, look up at the Basilica’s belfry. Imagine the sound of its bells ringing out, filling the air with a melody that’s been silent for far too long. Soon, that imagination will become a reality.
