Rain Cancels PN Event, Labour Seeks Cover

Rain Drenched: PN’s Event Cancellation and Labour’s Dash for Cover

Rain pounded on the rooftops of Pietà, a relentless drumroll that echoed the sudden change of plans for Malta’s two major political parties. The Nationalist Party (PN) was forced to cancel their event, while Labour Party (PL) members scrambled for cover, as a typical Maltese summer downpour turned political plans upside down.

PN’s Event Cancellation: A Stormy Setback

The PN had planned a grand event at the Pietà Sports Complex, a stone’s throw from the Grand Harbour. The stage was set, literally, with a large tent erected to host party faithful and supporters. But Mother Nature had other plans. As the skies darkened and the first drops fell, party officials made the call to cancel the event, citing safety concerns.

Party leader Bernard Grech, speaking to Hot Malta, expressed disappointment but understanding. “We’re disappointed that our plans had to change, but the safety of our supporters is paramount. We’ll reschedule and look forward to seeing everyone then,” he said, standing under an umbrella, rainwater dripping from its edges.

Labour Takes Cover: A Dash for Shelter

Across town, Labour Party members were caught in the downpour as they campaigned in Floriana. The sudden storm forced them to seek shelter in nearby shops and cafes, turning the usually bustling Republic Street into a temporary refuge.

PL MP Jason Azzopardi, drenched but unperturbed, joked, “We’re used to fighting political battles, but this was a different kind of challenge. We’ll dry off and get back to work, rain or shine.”

Weathering the Political Storm

This isn’t the first time weather has intervened in Maltese politics. In 2019, a heatwave forced political parties to reschedule events, and in 2017, heavy rain led to the cancellation of a Labour Party rally. But as they say, the show must go on, and both parties are already rescheduling their events.

For now, though, it’s a case of waiting out the storm. The rain may have caused a temporary pause in political activity, but it’s unlikely to dampen the spirit of either party. After all, in Malta’s often tumultuous political scene, a bit of rain is just another challenge to overcome.

As PN’s Bernard Grech put it, “We’ll weather this storm, just like we weather every challenge. We’re Maltese, and we don’t let a bit of rain stop us.”
