Rain Forces PN to Cancel Event, Labour to Take Cover

Rain Check: Political Parties Scramble as Storm Forces Event Cancellations

As the first heavy rain of the season pounded Malta’s streets, political parties found themselves in a literal storm, with the Nationalist Party (PN) forced to cancel an event and the Labour Party (PL) seeking cover. The sudden downpour, which caught many off guard, led to a flurry of last-minute changes in the political calendar.

PN’s Rainy Day Cancellation

The PN was set to launch its campaign for the upcoming local council elections at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta. However, the heavy rain and thunderstorms led to a sudden change of plans. Party officials, seeing the weather as an omen, decided to postpone the event until further notice. “We can’t risk our members and supporters getting soaked,” said a party spokesperson, as they hurriedly rearranged the stage decorations at the MCC.

The cancellation left many PN supporters disappointed, with some taking to social media to express their frustration. “I was really looking forward to it,” said Mario Debono, a PN supporter from Birkirkara. “But I guess the weather had other plans.”

PL Takes Cover

Meanwhile, the Labour Party was caught off guard as the storm hit midway through their event at the Labour Party headquarters in Floriana. Party officials quickly ushered attendees inside, with some seeking refuge in the nearby St. George’s Square. “It was quite a sight,” said a PL official, laughing. “We had people running for cover, umbrellas turning inside out, and even a few puddles forming in the square.”

The PL event, a meet-and-greet with local candidates, continued indoors, with party members using the opportunity to discuss the weather and the upcoming elections. “It was a bit chaotic, but we made the best of it,” said a PL candidate, who wished to remain anonymous.

Weathering the Storm

The sudden storm served as a reminder that, despite the best-laid plans, Malta’s weather can be unpredictable. Both parties have since rescheduled their events, with the PN planning to launch their campaign next week and the PL holding another meet-and-greet in the coming days.

As Malta braces for more rain in the coming days, both parties have urged their supporters to stay safe and keep an eye on their social media channels for any updates on their events. “We’re ready for whatever the weather throws at us,” said a PN spokesperson, with a smile.

In the meantime, Malta’s political scene continues to heat up, with the local council elections just around the corner. Stay tuned to Hot Malta for all the latest updates and developments.
