Rain Forces PN to Cancel Event, Labour to Take Cover
Rain Check: Political Parties Scramble as Storm Forces Event Cancellations
As the first heavy raindrops began to splatter on the cobblestones of Republic Street, Malta’s political parties found themselves in a race against time. The Nationalist Party (PN) was forced to cancel their much-anticipated event, while the Labour Party (PL) scrambled to find alternative indoor venues. The sudden change in weather plans left both parties, and the public, in a flurry of activity.
PN’s Republic Street Event: A Washout
The PN had planned a grand event on Republic Street, Valletta, to mark the 75th anniversary of the party’s foundation. The event, scheduled for the evening of the 27th, was to include speeches, cultural performances, and a commemorative cake cutting. However, as the weather forecast predicted heavy rain and thunderstorms, the party was left with no choice but to cancel.
“We regret to inform our supporters that, due to the inclement weather, tonight’s event has been cancelled,” a PN spokesperson announced on their social media platforms. The party expressed their disappointment but assured supporters that the event would be rescheduled for a later date.
Labour: From Street to Studio
Meanwhile, the Labour Party, which had planned a rally in the same area, found themselves in a similar predicament. With the weather turning foul, they quickly shifted their plans from an outdoor rally to an indoor press conference at the Labour Party headquarters in Floriana.
Party leader and Prime Minister Robert Abela addressed the media, discussing the government’s achievements and plans. “We had hoped to celebrate with our supporters on the streets of Valletta,” he said, “but the weather had other plans. We’ll take this opportunity to engage with the public through the media instead.”
Public Reaction and
The sudden change in plans sparked a mix of reactions from the public. Some expressed disappointment at the cancellations, while others understood the necessity, given the weather conditions. “It’s a shame, but safety comes first,” said Maria, a PN supporter from Birkirkara. “I hope they’ll reschedule soon,” she added.
As for the parties, they’re already . The PN has promised to reschedule their event as soon as the weather permits. The Labour Party, meanwhile, has hinted at a series of indoor events and press conferences in the coming weeks, capitalizing on the momentum generated by their recent achievements.
In a statement, PN leader Bernard Grech said, “We’re disappointed, but we’re not discouraged. We’ll be back, bigger and better, as soon as the weather allows. Until then, we’ll continue our work, engaging with the public and preparing for the next chapter in Malta’s political scene.”
