Rain Halts PN Event, Labour Carries On

Downpour Derailed: Political Parties Scramble as Rain Spoils Plans

It was meant to be a day of political rallying, but Mother Nature had other plans. Yesterday, the Nationalist Party’s (PN) event at the historic Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta was left high and dry, quite literally, as a sudden downpour forced a cancellation. Meanwhile, across town, the Labour Party (PL) took cover, their event at the Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC) in Floriana proceeding indoors.

PN’s Outdoor Event Washout

The PN had set up a stage, ready for their speakers to address the crowd. But as the first drops of rain began to fall, the audience started to scatter, seeking shelter under nearby arches and awnings. The party’s secretary general, Clyde Puli, announced the cancellation, citing safety concerns. “We can’t have people standing in the rain, it’s not worth risking anyone’s health,” he said, as the stage crew began to dismantle the equipment.

This isn’t the first time rain has disrupted political events in Malta. In 2019, a heavy downpour forced the PL to cut short their event at the Granaries in Floriana. But yesterday’s cancellation was a blow for the PN, who had hoped to capitalise on recent polls showing a narrowing gap with the PL.

Labour’s Indoor Gathering

Meanwhile, at the MCC, the PL’s event went ahead as planned, albeit indoors. The party’s supporters filled the conference hall, listening to speeches from the party’s top brass. PL leader Robert Abela, fresh from his recent visit to Brussels, spoke about the party’s achievements and plans for the future.

Abela, when asked about the PN’s cancellation, said, “We’re sorry to hear about their event, but we’re glad our supporters could still hear our message, rain or shine.” The PL had prepared for such an eventuality, having set up a backup venue indoors.

Weathering the Political Storm

As the rain continued to pour, both parties were left to reflect on the day’s events. The PN, while disappointed, vowed to reschedule their event. PL supporters, meanwhile, left the MCC with smiles on their faces, their event unaffected by the weather.

In Malta’s often unpredictable political scene, one thing is certain: the weather can always throw a spanner in the works. But as both parties have shown, they’re ready to adapt, to weather the storm, and carry on.

As for the next political event? Let’s hope the weather gods are smiling down on Malta.
