Valletta’s ‘Museums by Candlelight’ Returns on June 6
Valletta’s Streets to Shimmer with History on June 6: ‘Museums by Candlelight’ Returns
Imagine Valletta’s grand auberges and palaces, usually bathed in the harsh glow of daylight or neon streetlights, instead illuminated by the soft, flickering glow of candles. This enchanting scene is set to unfold once again on June 6, as the popular ‘Museums by Candlelight’ event makes its triumphant return to our capital city.
Unveiling Valletta’s Historic Enchantment
Organised by the Valletta 2018 Foundation, this annual event transforms the UNESCO World Heritage site into an open-air museum, offering a unique perspective on its rich history and architectural marvels. Last year, over 10,000 visitors wandered the city’s cobbled streets, captivated by the romantic ambiance and the chance to explore museums and historic sites after dark.
This year’s edition promises to be no less magical. “We’re thrilled to bring back ‘Museums by Candlelight’,” says Anthony Spiteri, Cultural Programme Coordinator at Valletta 2018. “It’s an opportunity for locals and tourists alike to experience our capital in a completely different light, both literally and metaphorically.”
What to Expect: A Night of History and Culture
From the Grandmaster’s Palace to the National Museum of Archaeology, a multitude of museums and historic sites will open their doors after sunset, offering guided tours and special exhibitions. The event also includes live music and street performances, turning Valletta’s streets into a vibrant stage.
One of the highlights is the ‘Candlelit Procession’, a mesmerising parade that winds its way through the city’s narrow streets, led by the historic Wignacourt Band. It’s a sight that’s not to be missed, especially if you’re lucky enough to secure a spot along the iconic Republic Street.
Practical Information: Plan Your Night
Mark your calendars for June 6, and make sure to plan your evening accordingly. Many museums will open their doors from 7 PM onwards, with the candlelit procession kicking off at 9 PM sharp. While entry to most museums is free, some may require a small fee or advance booking.
Remember to dress warmly, as the sea breeze can be chilly even in June. Comfortable shoes are a must for exploring the city’s cobblestone streets. And if you’re planning on visiting multiple sites, consider downloading the official ‘Valletta 2018’ app, which offers a handy map and up-to-date information.
As the sun sets on another day in Malta’s capital, the city prepares to don its most enchanting guise. So, grab your loved ones, and get ready to lose yourself in the magic of ‘Museums by Candlelight’.
