Alex Borg: Specialist Police Squad for Gozo’s Drug War

Alex Borg’s Bid: A Specialist Police Squad for Gozo’s Drug Battle

Imagine the sun setting over the Azure Window, now a memory, but the beauty of Gozo’s coast still unspoiled. Yet, hidden in the shadows, a different story unfolds. Drugs, a scourge that’s crept into our sister island’s peaceful streets. Now, local politician Alex Borg is proposing a solution: a specialist police anti-drug squad, dedicated to Gozo.

Gozo’s Drug Challenge

Gozo, with its winding streets and tight-knit communities, has long been considered a sanctuary from Malta’s urban woes. But drugs have found their way here too. From Xlendi’s beach bars to the quiet streets of Victoria, the problem is real and growing. According to Borg, the current resources are stretched thin, and a dedicated squad is needed to tackle the issue head-on.

“We’re not talking about a few isolated incidents,” Borg says, “We’re talking about a trend that’s putting our children at risk, harming our communities, and threatening Gozo’s reputation as a safe, family-friendly destination.”

Borg’s Proposal: A Specialist Squad

Borg’s proposal is straightforward: create a specialist anti-drug squad, based in Gozo, and staffed with officers trained in drug enforcement. The squad would operate independently, reporting directly to the Commissioner of Police, ensuring it has the autonomy and resources to make a real difference.

“We need officers who understand the unique challenges of policing in Gozo,” Borg explains, “Who know the streets, the communities, and the language. Officers who can build trust and gather intelligence, not just react to crimes after they’ve happened.”

The squad would operate in three key areas: prevention, through education and community engagement; enforcement, by targeting drug dealers and suppliers; and support, by connecting addicts with rehabilitation services.

Next Steps and Public Support

Borg has already presented his proposal to the Police Commissioner and is seeking support from the public and other politicians. He’s calling for a public meeting in Victoria Square, where residents can voice their concerns and show their support for the initiative.

“This is our island, our home,” Borg says, “And it’s up to all of us to protect it. I’m calling on everyone who cares about Gozo to stand with us, to make their voice heard, and to help us build a safer, healthier future for our children.”

So, as the sun sets over the Mediterranean, casting its golden glow over Gozo’s shores, let’s hope that the shadows of drugs can be banished, and our island can truly shine.
