Birkirkara Boy Dies After Pool Incident
Tragedy in Birkirkara: Four-year-old boy dies after pool incident
In the quiet residential street of Triq San Ġorġ Preca, Birkirkara, a family’s world shattered on Tuesday. Little Matthew, just four years old, slipped away, five days after a horrifying accident in their backyard swimming pool.
An Instant of Terror
The sunny afternoon of August 15th started like any other. Matthew’s mother, Lisa, had her eyes on him as he played nearby. In a heartbeat, he was gone, vanished into the deep end of their pool. Panic erupted. Neighbors rushed in, pulling the unconscious boy out. CPR was administered, sirens wailed, but Matthew never regained consciousness.
Five Days of Hope and Despair
Matthew was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he fought for his life for five excruciating days. His parents, Lisa and Tony, held onto hope, praying for a miracle. The community rallied around them, with prayers and support pouring in from Birkirkara and beyond. But on Monday, the heart-wrenching news no one wanted to hear: Matthew had passed away.
Preventable Tragedy
This tragedy has once again highlighted the silent danger lurking in many Maltese backyards. According to the Malta Resuscitation Council, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children aged one to four. Yet, it’s preventable. The council urges parents to install barriers around pools, never leave children unattended, and learn CPR.
Matthew’s death has left the community reeling. “It’s a stark reminder that accidents can happen in an instant,” says neighbor Maria, her voice heavy with emotion. “We need to do more to protect our children.”
In the wake of this tragedy, the Birkirkara Local Council has pledged to step up pool safety awareness campaigns. “We must ensure no other family suffers such a devastating loss,” says Mayor Doris Vella.
Remembering Matthew
On Wednesday, Matthew’s family, friends, and neighbors gathered for a vigil at the Birkirkara Parish Church. The little boy who loved dinosaurs and superheroes was laid to rest, his tiny coffin draped in a Superman blanket. His parents, broken but determined, vowed to honor his memory by pushing for stricter pool safety regulations.
“Matthew was our sunshine,” Lisa whispers, tears streaming down her face. “We’ll make sure his light continues to shine, by saving other children from this preventable tragedy.”
