Birkirkara Boy Dies Five Days After Pool Accident

Tragedy in Birkirkara: Four-year-old boy dies after pool accident

The peaceful, sun-drenched streets of Birkirkara were shrouded in grief today as news spread that a four-year-old boy had passed away, five days after a tragic accident in his family’s swimming pool. Little Matthew, as he was known to his neighbours, had slipped and fallen into the pool at his family home on Triq il-Karmnu on Sunday.

Emergency Response and Hospitalization

Neighbours and family members rushed to his aid, pulling him out of the water and administering CPR before emergency services arrived. Matthew was immediately rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remained in critical condition until his passing yesterday evening.

Dr. Joseph Muscat, a spokesperson for the hospital, expressed his condolences to the family, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Matthew’s family during this incredibly difficult time. Our team did everything possible to save him.”

Community Mourns and Calls for Safety Awareness

Residents of Birkirkara have been left devastated by the tragedy. Maria, a long-time neighbour, described Matthew as a “bundle of energy and joy,” her voice breaking as she spoke. “We all watched him grow up. It’s unimaginable that he’s gone,” she said, her eyes welling up.

In the wake of the tragedy, many in the community are calling for increased safety awareness, especially during the summer months when pools are in frequent use. Paul, a local father of two, stressed the importance of pool safety, “We all need to be more vigilant. It only takes a moment for a tragedy like this to happen.”

Local councillor, Carmen Zammit, echoed these sentiments, “We must do more to raise awareness about pool safety. We’ve lost a child, and that’s a wake-up call for us all.”

Remembering Matthew

Matthew’s funeral will be held tomorrow at the Church of St. Helen in Birkirkara. The community has been invited to attend and pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Razzett tal-Hbiberija, a local children’s charity.

As the sun sets on Birkirkara today, the community mourns the loss of a little boy who brought so much joy to those around him. Matthew’s smile will be remembered, and his loss will serve as a reminder of the importance of pool safety.
