Car Crashes, Bursts into Flames on Mdina Road

In a dramatic turn of events, a motorist was rescued from their burning car after a crash on Mdina Road yesterday afternoon. The incident, which occurred near the historic Mdina Gate, sent plumes of smoke into the air, causing a stir among passersby and locals.

Rescue Operation

The driver, a 35-year-old woman from Msida, was lucky to escape with minor injuries. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the car, a silver Ford Focus, lose control and crash into a streetlight before bursting into flames. Firefighters from the nearby Rabat station arrived within minutes, quickly extinguishing the blaze and rescuing the driver.

“I was walking my dog when I saw the car crash,” said Joe, a local resident. “The flames spread so quickly. It was terrifying. I’m just glad the driver is okay.”

Investigation Underway

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Police have not ruled out mechanical failure or driver error. The incident has, however, raised concerns about safety on Mdina Road, a stretch known for its tight bends and heavy traffic.

Councilor for Rabat, Mario Vella, has called for a review of road safety measures in the area. “We need to ensure that our roads are safe for both residents and visitors,” he said. “We’ll be working with the relevant authorities to look into this matter.”

In the meantime, the driver is recovering at Mater Dei Hospital. Her family has expressed their gratitude to the emergency services for their swift response.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety. Always remember to drive carefully, especially on roads with challenging conditions like Mdina Road.
