Car Inferno on Triq Sant’ Andrija: Motorist Rescued in Nick of Time

In the heart of Msida, along the bustling Triq Sant’ Andrija, a dramatic scene unfolded yesterday as a car crashed and burst into flames, leaving the motorist with a narrow escape. The incident, which occurred around 4 pm, through the usually calm residential area, with eyewitnesses describing it as a “ball of fire”.

Rescue Operation

Passersby and residents wasted no time in springing into action. “I was walking my dog when I heard the crash,” said Mr. Joseph Vella, a 65-year-old resident of Triq Sant’ Andrija. “I saw the car hit the pole and immediately catch fire. I rushed to help, along with a few others.” They managed to pull the driver, a 32-year-old man, out of the vehicle just seconds before the flames engulfed the entire car.

The Malta Fire Authority (MFA) arrived swiftly on the scene, battling the blaze for over an hour before it was fully extinguished. The driver was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he is currently being treated for minor injuries and shock.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. However, eyewitnesses suggest that the driver may have lost control of the vehicle while attempting to avoid a pedestrian. “He was driving quite fast,” said Ms. Maria Azzopardi, who was parking her car nearby. “I saw him swerve to avoid hitting someone, and then he hit the pole and everything happened so fast.”

The incident has once again raised concerns about speeding in residential areas. Msida Local Council has announced that they will be reviewing traffic management in the area, with a focus on reducing speed limits and improving pedestrian safety.

Community Response

The quick thinking and bravery of the bystanders have been praised by the police and the MFA. “Their swift action undoubtedly saved the driver’s life,” said a spokesperson for the MFA. The driver’s family has also expressed their gratitude to the community for their help.

In the wake of the incident, residents have been reminded of the importance of road safety and the need for vigilance, especially in residential areas. “We need to look out for each other,” said Mr. Vella. “It could have been any one of us in that car.”

As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: the community of Msida came together in a time of crisis, demonstrating the resilience and spirit that defines our little island.
