Car Goes Up in Flames on Triq il-Kbira: Motorist Rescued in Dramatic Scene

Picture this: It’s a sunny afternoon on Triq il-Kbira, one of Malta’s busiest streets, and suddenly, the peaceful scene is shattered by the screech of brakes and the crunch of metal. A car has just crashed into a lamp post, and within seconds, it’s engulfed in flames. This was the dramatic scene that unfolded yesterday, leaving motorists and pedestrians alike shocked and stunned.

The Crash and the Blaze

Witnesses reported that the car, a silver Ford Focus, was traveling at speed when it lost control near the junction with Triq San Pawl. It mounted the pavement, crashed into the lamp post, and came to rest against a nearby wall. Within moments, smoke started billowing from the car, and soon, it was alight, flames licking at the windows and black smoke pouring into the sky.

Fortunately, passersby quickly sprang into action. “I was walking by when I saw the crash,” said Joe Borg, a local resident. “I ran over and tried to get the driver out, but the flames were spreading so fast. I had to step back.”

Rescue Operation

The Malta Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) was on the scene within minutes. Firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, fought their way through the intense heat to reach the trapped driver. They managed to pull the motorist, a man in his 30s, from the burning wreckage just as the flames reached the fuel tank.

Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department (MCPD) treated the driver at the scene before rushing him to Mater Dei Hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, but he is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

Investigation and Aftermath

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward. The road was closed for several hours while emergency services worked to clear the scene and make the area safe.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of driving at excessive speeds, especially in urban areas. The MFRS has urged motorists to always adhere to speed limits and drive safely.

As for Triq il-Kbira, life has returned to normal. The charred remains of the car have been removed, and the lamp post has been replaced. But the memory of the dramatic scene will linger for some time.

“It was terrifying,” said Borg. “But I’m just glad the driver is going to be okay. That’s the most important thing.”
