Car Inferno on Triq il-Kbira: Motorist Rescued in Dramatic Scene
In the heart of Rabat, a car burst into flames on Triq il-Kbira, the main street leading to the ancient walls of Mdina, leaving a motorist in a desperate situation. The dramatic scene unfolded on Tuesday evening, as the car, a silver Ford Focus, suddenly engulfed in flames, through the usually peaceful street.
Heroic Efforts: Neighbors and Police Spring into Action
The motorist, a 45-year-old man from Rabat, found himself trapped in the burning vehicle. Neighbors, quick to react, rushed to his aid, smashing the car windows with whatever they could find. Meanwhile, police officers, who were nearby, sprinted towards the scene, their sirens wailing.
“I saw the car on fire and the man trapped inside,” said Joseph, a local resident who helped in the rescue. “I grabbed a chair from my balcony and started hitting the window. It took a few tries, but we finally managed to break it open.”
Firefighters Arrive, Douse Flames, and Save the Day
Within minutes, the Rabat Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived, their engines roaring down Triq il-Kbira. They swiftly extinguished the flames, allowing the police to pull the motorist to safety. The man, though shaken, escaped with minor injuries.
“We received the call at 7:30 PM,” said Inspector Joe Camilleri of the Rabat Police Station. “Our officers were on the scene within minutes, and the firefighters arrived shortly after. It was a team effort, and we’re all relieved the motorist is safe.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but early indications suggest it may have been an electrical fault. The car was completely destroyed, its charred remains a stark contrast to the historic buildings that line Triq il-Kbira.
Mdina’s Main Street: A Witness to History
Triq il-Kbira, or Main Street, has been a witness to Rabat’s history for centuries. From Roman times to the present day, it has seen triumph and tragedy. Tuesday’s incident is a stark reminder that even in the most unexpected of places, danger can strike.
Residents and tourists alike were left shaken by the event. “I was walking back from Mdina when I saw the flames,” said Maria, a tourist from Italy. “It was terrifying, but I’m glad the man is okay.”
: Safety Reminders and Preventive Measures
As the investigation continues, local authorities remind motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good condition and to always have a fire extinguisher in their car. Regular vehicle check-ups can help prevent such incidents, saving lives and property.
“We’re grateful for the quick response of our police and firefighters,” said Rabat Mayor, Mario Fava. “This incident serves as a reminder for us all to stay vigilant and ensure our vehicles are safe.”
As for the motorist, he’s recovering at Mater Dei Hospital, grateful for the quick actions of his rescuers. “I owe my life to them,” he said, his voice still hoarse from the smoke. “I’m just glad it’s over.”
