Car Plunges Off St. Paul’s Bay Promenade: Motorist Rescued in Flames
Imagine this: a warm summer evening in St. Paul’s Bay, the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. Suddenly, the peaceful scene is shattered by the screech of tires and the sickening crunch of metal. A car, accelerating at breakneck speed, crashes through the safety barrier and plunges into the Mediterranean Sea. This wasn’t a scene from an action movie, but a real-life drama that unfolded on Malta’s northern coast last night.
Daring Rescue: A Community Response
The car, a silver Ford Focus, hit the water with a splash, sending a plume of water and debris into the air. Within seconds, it began to sink, the engine stuttering and dying as the salty water flooded the compartment. But the most chilling sight was yet to come. As the car disappeared beneath the waves, flames began to lick at the surface, the result of a fuel leak igniting. The driver, a 32-year-old man from Qawra, was trapped inside, his life hanging in the balance.
But the community wasn’t about to stand by and watch. Within minutes, a group of bystanders had stripped off their clothes and dived into the water, swimming towards the burning car. Among them was Joseph Xuereb, a local fisherman who was moored nearby. “I saw the car go in and I knew we had to act fast,” he said. “I’ve seen enough fires at sea to know that once that fuel catches light, you’ve got minutes, maybe seconds, to get someone out.”
Xuereb and the others managed to pull the driver’s door open, the water and flames creating a hellish scene beneath the surface. The driver, disoriented and injured, was pulled out just as the flames began to spread, the car’s fuel tank threatening to explode. The group swam back to shore, the driver in tow, as the car was consumed by flames and finally sank beneath the waves.
Investigation Launched: Was Speed a Factor?
The driver was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he is currently being treated for minor injuries and shock. The incident has sparked an investigation by the Malta Police, who are treating it as a case of reckless driving. “We are looking into all possibilities, but initial indications suggest that speed was a factor,” said a police spokesperson. “We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.”
The incident has also raised questions about the safety of the promenade, a popular spot for both locals and tourists. “We’ve been calling for safety improvements for years,” said a spokesperson for the St. Paul’s Bay Local Council. “We need better barriers, better lighting, and maybe even speed cameras to keep drivers in check.”
Community Praise for Heroes
While the investigation continues, the community has been quick to praise the brave bystanders who risked their lives to save the driver. “They were heroes, plain and simple,” said one eyewitness. “I don’t know what I would have done if I was in their shoes, but they didn’t hesitate.”
The driver’s family has also spoken out, expressing their gratitude to those who saved their loved one. “We can’t thank them enough,” said the driver’s mother. “We’re just glad he’s alive.”
