Florence Horror: Seven Injured as Driver Rams Crowd
Terror in the Streets: Seven Injured as Driver Plows into Crowd in Italian City
In the heart of Italy, the usually bustling Piazza del Duomo in the historic city of Florence was today turned into a scene of chaos and fear. A driver, in what authorities are treating as a deliberate act, plowed into a crowd of pedestrians, leaving seven people injured.
The Incident Unfolds
Witnesses reported that the incident occurred around midday, as the square was filled with tourists and locals enjoying the sunny day. The driver, a 27-year-old man from the outskirts of Florence, accelerated his car into the crowd before being apprehended by police. The scene was quickly cordoned off, and emergency services rushed to the aid of the injured.
Among the injured were four tourists, two from Germany and one each from France and the United Kingdom. The other three were Italian locals. Their conditions range from minor injuries to serious but non-life-threatening, according to the latest reports from Florence’s Careggi Hospital.
Reactions and Condemnations
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte swiftly condemned the act, stating, “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We will not let fear or hatred divide us.” Florence’s mayor, Dario Nardella, visited the scene and reassured the public that the city remains safe. “We will not change our way of life. We will continue to live freely and in peace,” he said.
Malta’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has issued a statement expressing solidarity with Italy and offering assistance to any Maltese nationals affected. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families,” the statement reads.
Security Measures Tightened
In response to the incident, Italian authorities have announced enhanced security measures in public spaces, particularly in tourist areas. This includes increased police patrols and temporary barriers in some squares. In Malta, the police have also been advised to remain vigilant, with a focus on crowded areas like Valletta’s Republic Street and Sliema’s Strand.
Dr. Joseph Muscat, former Prime Minister of Malta, shared his thoughts on the incident, “We must remain united and resolute in the face of such cowardly acts. Our way of life, our freedom, is our greatest strength.”
