Fort Chambray: Gozo’s Next National Park?

Fort Chambray: A New Dawn for Gozo’s Green Lung?

Imagine this: the sun dipping below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the rugged scene of Gozo. You’re standing on the ramparts of Fort Chambray, not just admiring the view, but knowing you’re part of a living, breathing national park. This isn’t a dream; it’s the vision proposed by Momentum, a local NGO, for Gozo’s historic fort.

From Military Outpost to Green Oasis

Fort Chambray, perched on the outskirts of Xewkija, has seen its fair share of history. Built in the 18th century to protect Gozo from invaders, it’s now a silent sentinel, its stone walls echoing tales of the past. But Momentum believes this fort can serve a new purpose in the 21st century – as the heart of Gozo’s first national park.

“We envision Fort Chambray as the hub of a new national park,” explains Dr. Joseph Galea, President of Momentum. “A place where nature, history, and culture intertwine, offering a unique experience for locals and tourists alike.”

Nature’s Playground: A Park for All Seasons

Picture this: a network of trails winding through indigenous maquis, leading to hidden coves and ancient sites. A place where you can spot rare birds in spring, hike through wildflowers in summer, and watch the sun set over the sea in autumn. This is the park Momentum envisions, stretching from Fort Chambray to the coast, encompassing areas like Ta’ Cenc and Ras il-Wardija.

But it’s not just about the scenery. The proposed park would also serve as a living classroom, a research hub, and a community space. “We want to engage schools, universities, and local communities in caring for and learning from this unique ecosystem,” says Dr. Galea.

Making It Happen: The Road Ahead

Momentum’s proposal is more than just a dream. They’ve conducted surveys, held public consultations, and even identified potential funding sources. But turning this vision into reality will take time, effort, and support.

“We need everyone – locals, tourists, policymakers – to get behind this idea,” urges Dr. Galea. “Together, we can transform Fort Chambray and its surroundings into a national park that’s the pride of Gozo and a beacon for sustainable tourism in Malta.”

So, what do you say, Malta? Are you ready to turn Fort Chambray into Gozo’s new green lung?
