Fort Chambray: Malta’s Next National Park?
Imagine this: the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky over Gozo’s rugged coastline in hues of orange and pink. Now, picture this same view, but with Fort Chambray at its heart, not just another historic landmark, but a thriving national park. This isn’t a fantasy, but a proposal that’s gaining momentum.
Fort Chambray: A Hidden Gem Unveiled
Nestled on Gozo’s northwest coast, Fort Chambray stands as a silent sentinel, its history echoing through its weathered walls. Built by the Knights of St. John in the 18th century, this fort has seen its fair share of history. But now, it’s poised for a new chapter. Momentum, a local NGO, has proposed transforming Fort Chambray into Gozo’s first national park.
More Than Just a Park: A Vision for Fort Chambray
Momentum’s vision isn’t just about turning Fort Chambray into a green space. It’s about creating a living, breathing ecosystem that celebrates Gozo’s unique heritage and biodiversity. The proposal includes plans for walking trails, educational centers, and even a visitors’ center that doubles as a café, serving locally sourced produce.
“We want Fort Chambray to be a place where locals and tourists alike can connect with nature, learn about our history, and enjoy a great cup of coffee,” says Mark Mallia, a spokesperson for Momentum. “It’s about creating a space that’s sustainable, accessible, and above all, alive.”
From Proposal to Reality: The Road Ahead
The proposal has sparked a buzz among Gozitans and Maltese alike. But turning this vision into reality will take time, effort, and support. Momentum is currently working with local councils, environmental experts, and the public to refine the proposal and make it a reality.
“We’re not just building a park,” Mallia explains. “We’re creating a community. And that means involving the community every step of the way.”
If all goes according to plan, Fort Chambray could be Gozo’s newest national park by 2025. But for now, the future is still being shaped, one idea at a time.
“This is just the beginning,” Mallia says, a smile in his voice. “And we can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
