Lidl Malta Recall: What You Need to Know About the Recent Food Safety Alert

As you’re strolling down Republic Street in Valletta, perhaps stopping by the bustling Is-Suq Tal-Belt for a bite, you might want to check your kitchen cupboard. Lidl Malta has recently issued a recall for one of its products due to a potential health risk.

The Product in Question

The recalled item is the ‘Lidl Deluxe’ brand of frozen mixed berries (400g), with a best before date of 12/2024. The recall is a precautionary measure following a warning from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) about a possible contamination with hepatitis A.

What’s the Risk?

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that can cause fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, and jaundice. In most cases, it resolves on its own, but it can be serious for certain individuals, such as young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

The risk of infection is low, but Lidl Malta is taking no chances. They’ve asked customers who have purchased the affected product to return it to their nearest store for a full refund. No receipt is required.

What Lidl Malta Says

In a statement, Lidl Malta reassured customers that they take food safety very seriously. “We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused and thank our customers for their understanding,” they said.

This isn’t the first time a major retailer has recalled a product due to potential health risks. In 2018, Tesco recalled thousands of packets of frozen vegetables due to a listeria scare, and in 2020, Marks & Spencer recalled certain batches of sandwiches due to possible E. coli contamination.

What Should You Do?

If you’ve bought the recalled Lidl Deluxe mixed berries, don’t eat them. Return them to Lidl for a refund. If you’re unsure, check the packaging – the product in question has the barcode 5059893400000.
