Life Guards & Volunteers Rescue Turtle in Little Armier

Turtle Tale of Survival: Life Guards and Volunteers Team Up in Little Armier

Imagine, if you will, the sun-kissed shores of Little Armier, a tranquil haven along Malta’s northwest coast. On a seemingly ordinary day, a group of vigilant life guards spotted something unusual bobbing in the azure waters. It was no ordinary object, but a creature in distress – a loggerhead sea turtle.

Rescue Mission at Little Armier

Quickly, the life guards at Little Armier Beach, operated by the Malta Tourism Authority, sprang into action. They carefully maneuvered their rescue boat towards the struggling turtle, named ‘Dott’ by the volunteers who would later care for her. Dott, short for ‘Dottore’ or doctor in Maltese, was entangled in a mass of fishing net, her movements hindered and energy waning.

With precision and care, the life guards cut away the net, freeing Dott from her aquatic prison. But their work was far from over. The exhausted turtle needed immediate medical attention. That’s when the Nature Trust Malta volunteers stepped in.

Nature Trust Malta: Stepping In to Save the Day

Nature Trust Malta, a local NGO dedicated to conserving Malta’s natural heritage, has been instrumental in caring for and rehabilitating injured and distressed turtles like Dott. Upon receiving a call from the life guards, their team swiftly arrived at Little Armier, ready to provide the necessary care.

Dott was carefully transported to the Nature Trust’s turtle rehabilitation centre in Xemxija. Here, she was given a clean bill of health – no broken bones or serious injuries, just exhaustion and dehydration. After a much-needed rest and some TLC, Dott was ready to return to her watery home.

Releasing Dott: A New Lease on Life

Under the watchful eyes of the Nature Trust volunteers and a small crowd of onlookers, Dott was released back into the Mediterranean Sea. This time, she was free from nets and brimming with renewed energy. As she disappeared beneath the waves, it was a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between human activity and marine life.

This collaborative effort between the Malta Tourism Authority’s life guards and Nature Trust Malta of conservation and community involvement. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when we look out for one another – be it human or marine creature.

As we continue to enjoy Malta’s beautiful coastline, let’s remember Dott’s story. Let’s be mindful of our impact on the environment and do our part to protect our marine friends. After all, every creature deserves a chance at survival and a happy ending.
