Tragedy at the Pool: Four-Year-Old Boy Dies After Falling In

In the quiet residential street of Triq il-Kbira, Birkirkara, a family’s world shattered last week. Little Matthew, just four years old, fell into the family swimming pool and, despite the best efforts of his family and emergency services, passed away five days later.

What Happened?

On that fateful afternoon, Matthew was playing in the garden of his family home. In a moment’s distraction, he wandered towards the pool and fell in. His parents, hearing his cries, rushed out and pulled him out of the water. They immediately performed CPR, a skill they had learned years ago, until emergency services arrived.

The Birkirkara Fire Station, just a few minutes away, responded swiftly. Paramedics took over, rushing Matthew to Mater Dei Hospital. For five long days, the family held onto hope, but Matthew’s injuries were too severe. He passed away on Tuesday, leaving behind a grieving family and a community in shock.

Community Mourns

News of Matthew’s death spread like wildfire through Birkirkara and beyond. Neighbors, many of whom knew Matthew from the local kindergarten, were devastated. “He was such a lively little boy,” said one neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous. “To think he’s gone, it’s just… it’s just too much.”

Flowers and teddies began to appear outside the family home, a makeshift memorial to the little boy who had touched so many lives. The local kindergarten held a special assembly, where children shared their favorite memories of Matthew.

CPR: A Life-Saving Skill

Matthew’s tragic death has once again highlighted CPR. In Malta, where swimming pools are common, it’s a skill that could save a life. “We’ve been teaching CPR in our first aid courses for years,” said Joe Borg, director of First Aid Malta. “But we can’t stress enough how important it is for everyone to know it. It could be the difference between life and death.”

In light of Matthew’s death, First Aid Malta has announced plans to offer free CPR courses to parents and guardians. “We want to do everything we can to prevent another tragedy like this,” said Borg.

Matthew’s funeral was held on Friday at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Birkirkara. The church was filled to capacity, a testament to the love and respect the community held for the little boy.

As the family prepares to say their final goodbyes, they have asked for privacy. They have also set up a fundraiser to support the Maltese Association of Parents of Children with Cancer, a cause close to their hearts.

In the quiet residential street of Triq il-Kbira, life goes on, but it’s a little quieter, a little sadder, without Matthew’s laughter echoing through the neighborhood.
