Malta Mourns Diver Lost in Italian Rescue Mission

As the sun dipped below the horizon yesterday, a grim silence fell over the Maltese coastguard station in Marsaxlokk. The crew had just returned from a harrowing 12-hour search, their mission cut short by a devastating turn of events. Among them was Maltese diver, Joseph Azzopardi, who had given his life in the relentless pursuit of two missing Italians.

The nightmare began on Sunday afternoon when a 40-foot yacht, the ‘Bella Vita’, was found adrift off the coast of Gozo. On board were signs of struggle, but no trace of the two Italian nationals, Giovanni Rossi and Lucia Moretti, who had chartered the vessel from Malta’s Grand Harbour just days before.
