Malta Mourns Diver Lost in Italian Rescue Mission
Tragedy in the Med: Maltese Diver Dies in Search for Missing Italians
As the sun dipped below the horizon yesterday, a grim silence fell over the Maltese coastguard station in Marsaxlokk. The crew had just returned from a harrowing 12-hour search, their mission cut short by a devastating turn of events. Among them was Maltese diver, Joseph Azzopardi, who had given his life in the relentless pursuit of two missing Italians.
Missing Since Sunday
The nightmare began on Sunday afternoon when a 40-foot yacht, the ‘Bella Vita’, was found adrift off the coast of Gozo. On board were signs of struggle, but no trace of the two Italian nationals, Giovanni Rossi and Lucia Moretti, who had chartered the vessel from Malta’s Grand Harbour just days before.
The Maltese authorities wasted no time in mounting a massive search and rescue operation. Coastguard vessels and helicopters scoured the Mediterranean, while divers, including Joseph Azzopardi, prepared to search the depths. The search area was vast, stretching from the Maltese islands to the Italian coast, some 100 nautical miles away.
Joseph’s Final Dive
Joseph Azzopardi was no stranger to the perils of the deep. A seasoned diver with over a decade of experience, he had seen his fair share of underwater hazards. Yet, as he descended into the inky blackness off the coast of Comino on Tuesday, he knew this dive was different. The currents were strong, visibility poor, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Joseph’s body was recovered by his fellow divers around midday, some 30 meters below the surface. He had been searching for signs of the missing Italians when he encountered a strong underwater current. Despite his extensive training, he was unable to fight the current and was swept away.
A Nation Mourns
News of Joseph’s death through Malta. From the quaint streets of Rabat to the bustling markets of Valletta, the mood was somber. Flowers and candles laid at the doorstep of Joseph’s home in Msida spoke volumes of the respect and admiration the islanders held for their fallen hero.
Prime Minister Robert Abela led the tributes, describing Joseph as “a true son of Malta whose bravery and selflessness will never be forgotten.” The Maltese flag flew at half-mast across the island, a poignant reminder of the sacrifice made by one of its own.
Search Continues
Despite the tragic turn of events, the search for Giovanni Rossi and Lucia Moretti continues. Italian and Maltese authorities have joined forces, determined to bring the missing pair home. The search area has been narrowed down, but the task remains daunting.
Back on dry land, Joseph Azzopardi’s family, friends, and fellow divers are left to grapple with their loss. Yet, they take solace in the knowledge that he died doing what he loved, serving his country, and giving others a fighting chance.
As the sun sets on another day of searching, the Maltese coastguard prepares to venture back into the Mediterranean. The hunt for Giovanni and Lucia is far from over, but one thing is certain – the spirit of Joseph Azzopardi will be with them every step of the way.
