Malta Mourns: Local Diver Dies in Search for Missing Italians
In the quiet coastal town of Marsaxlokk, Malta, the usually bustling fishing village is shrouded in a somber atmosphere today. The reason? The tragic news of the death of local rescue diver, Mario Azzopardi, during the search for two missing Italian tourists off the coast of the Maldives.
The Incident
Mario, a seasoned diver and member of the local voluntary organisation, the Malta Rescue Coordination Centre, was part of a multinational team assisting in the search for the two Italians who went missing while diving in the Maldives last week. Tragically, while Mario was conducting a dive in the search operation, he too went missing. His body was later recovered by his fellow divers.
A Life Dedicated to Service
Mario, a 45-year-old father of two from the small town of Zurrieq, was no stranger to risk. With over two decades of diving experience under his belt, he had dedicated his life to saving others. His service to the community was recognized in 2019 when he was awarded the Medal for Service by the President of Malta.
Mario’s loss has through Malta’s tight-knit diving community. “Mario was more than just a diver,” said John Attard, a fellow diver and close friend. “He was a mentor, a role model, and above all, a hero.”

Despite the tragic loss, the search for the missing Italians continues. The Maldivian authorities, along with international teams, are working tirelessly to locate the pair. Mario’s fellow divers at the Malta Rescue Coordination Centre have vowed to continue his mission, ensuring that no stone is left unturned in the search for the missing tourists.
