Malta’s Adult Education Centre: A Beacon of Lifelong Learning
In the Heart of the Mediterranean, a New Voice for Adult Education
Imagine this: a bustling classroom in the heart of Valletta, Malta’s capital city, filled with adults of all ages, backgrounds, and professions. They’re not there for a lecture or a meeting, but to learn something new – from coding to creative writing, from painting to pottery. This is not a scene from a utopian future, but a reality thanks to the Malta Adult Education Centre (MAEC).
A Growing Need, A Filling Gap
Malta, with its strong economy and thriving tech industry, is a place of opportunity. But with opportunity comes challenge. The island’s rapid growth has created a skills gap, and many adults find themselves in jobs that require new, often digital, skills. This is where MAEC steps in, offering a wide range of courses designed to upskill and reskill adults, helping them stay relevant in the job market and pursue personal interests.
MAEC was born out of a collaboration between the Ministry for Education and Employment and the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST). It’s a testament to Malta’s commitment to lifelong learning, a commitment that’s paying off. Since its inception in 2018, MAEC has seen a steady increase in enrollment, with over 2,000 adults signing up for courses last year alone.
Learning in the Heart of the City
MAEC’s flagship centre is located in the historic Old University Building in Valletta. The building, once home to the University of Malta, now echoes with the sounds of learning once again. Here, adults can choose from over 100 courses, ranging from digital marketing and graphic design to art history and creative writing. The centre also offers language courses, from Maltese for foreigners to English for locals.
But MAEC isn’t just about numbers and courses. It’s about community. The centre hosts regular events, from exhibitions to workshops, bringing together learners, teachers, and the wider community. It’s a place where adults can learn, connect, and grow, all in the heart of Malta’s vibrant capital.
: A Voice for All
MAEC’s future is bright. Plans are underway to expand the centre’s offerings, with new courses in areas like cybersecurity and renewable energy on the horizon. The centre also aims to reach out to more adults, especially those in rural areas, through online learning and partnerships with local councils.
As Malta continues to evolve, so too will MAEC, always striving to be a voice for adult education, a place where learning never stops, and where every adult can find a course that speaks to them.
“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself,” said John Dewey, the American philosopher and educator. In Malta, at the Malta Adult Education Centre, this philosophy is alive and thriving, one course at a time.
