Pharmacies Open Today: A Lifeline on Malta’s May 17

It’s 8:30 AM on a bustling Republic Street in Valletta. The sun is already painting the historic buildings in a warm, golden hue. But today, May 17, 2026, is not a typical day. A sudden spike in respiratory infections has left many Maltese households in need of over-the-counter remedies. Pharmacies, the unsung heroes of our healthcare system, are once again stepping up to the plate.

Emergency Measures: A Phased Approach

In response to the sudden demand, the Malta Chamber of Pharmacists has implemented a phased approach to ensure that essential medicines reach those who need them. “We’re prioritising high-risk areas and peak hours,” explains Dr. Joseph Mizzi, President of the Malta Chamber of Pharmacists. “Pharmacies in towns like Żabbar, Birkirkara, and Paola will have extended hours, while rural areas will have a rotating schedule.”

Here’s a breakdown of today’s pharmacy opening hours:

    • Valletta, Floriana, and Msida: 8 AM – 8 PM
    • Other towns (Birkirkara, Żabbar, Paola, etc.): 9 AM – 7 PM
    • Rural areas: Rotating schedule, check health.gov.mt for details

Stockpiling Avoided: A Community Effort

Thanks to swift communication and community cooperation, panic buying has been kept to a minimum. “We’ve been using social media to update the public on stock levels and opening hours,” says Dr. Mizzi. “The response has been fantastic. People are understanding and patient, respecting the need for fair access to medicines.”

Local councils have also played a crucial role. The Żabbar Local Council, for instance, has set up a hotline to direct residents to the nearest open pharmacy. “We’re all in this together,” says Żabbar Mayor, Dr. Anton Refalo. “It’s about looking out for our neighbours and ensuring everyone gets the care they need.”

A Word of Caution

While pharmacies are doing their utmost to meet demand, Dr. Mizzi urges the public to remain patient and responsible. “We’re working tirelessly to ensure everyone gets the medicines they need. But we need your cooperation. Please, only buy what you need and respect the advice of your pharmacist.”

As the day wears on, Republic Street begins to empty. The sun dips below the Grandmaster’s Palace, casting long shadows across the cobblestones. Another day, another challenge faced and overcome by Malta’s resilient community.
