Malta’s Unsung Hero: Noel Galea Bason
Noel Galea Bason: Malta’s Unsung Hero of Heritage Preservation
In the heart of Valletta, Malta’s capital city, stands a grand old building. It’s the Malta Postal Museum, a testament to our island’s rich history. But it wasn’t always this way. Once, it was a crumbling relic, destined for demolition. That is, until one man stepped in: Noel Galea Bason.
From Ruins to Renaissance
Noel, a soft-spoken architect with a steely determination, has dedicated his life to preserving Malta’s built heritage. In the 1980s, he saw the Postal Museum’s potential, despite its dilapidated state. He fought against plans to tear it down, instead advocating for restoration. His efforts paid off. Today, the museum stands proud, a beacon of Malta’s postal history.
But the Postal Museum is just one of many buildings Noel has saved. His portfolio reads like a who’s who of Malta’s architectural heritage: the Old University Building in Valletta, the Grandmaster’s Palace, the Church of the Jesuits in Valletta – the list goes on. Each one a testament to Noel’s unwavering commitment.
An Architect’s Calling
Noel’s love for architecture began in his childhood, growing up in the historic city of Mdina. “I was always fascinated by the old buildings,” he recalls. “I wanted to understand how they were built, why they looked the way they did.” This fascination led him to study architecture, first in Malta, then in Rome.
After graduation, Noel worked on various projects, but his heart was never in modern structures. “I found myself drawn to the old buildings,” he says. “They had a story to tell, a history to preserve.” So, he decided to focus on conservation, a field he’s been passionate about ever since.
Fighting for Malta’s Heritage
Noel’s work isn’t just about saving buildings; it’s about preserving Malta’s cultural identity. He’s fought against developers who saw only dollar signs in historic sites. He’s battled against government plans that prioritized progress over preservation. And he’s won. Time and time again.
But Noel’s not just a fighter; he’s also a teacher. He’s mentored countless young architects, instilling in them a love for Malta’s heritage. He’s lectured at the University of Malta, sharing his knowledge and passion with the next generation.
And he’s not done yet. Despite his many achievements, Noel remains humble, always ready to take on the next challenge. “As long as there are old buildings to save,” he says, “I’ll keep fighting.”
So, the next time you walk past a historic building in Malta, take a moment to appreciate it. And remember the man who fought to save it: Noel Galea Bason, Malta’s unsung hero of heritage preservation.
