Drugs Seized, Man Arrested at Qawra Roadblock

As the sun set over the bustling seaside town of Qawra, a routine police roadblock turned into a significant operation on Thursday evening. Officers from the Malta Police Force’s Drug Squad intercepted a car and discovered a substantial quantity of illegal drugs hidden inside.

According to sources close to the investigation, the roadblock was set up on Triq l-Imqabba, a busy street leading into Qawra, around 8 PM. The car, a silver Ford Focus, was stopped and searched after arousing the suspicion of the officers on duty.

The subsequent search uncovered a stash of cannabis, cocaine, and ecstasy, with an estimated street value of tens of thousands of euros. The drugs were carefully concealed within the car’s compartments, indicating a level of sophistication in the operation.

The driver, a 32-year-old man from Msida, was immediately arrested and taken into custody. He is currently being questioned by police, who are treating the case as a serious drug trafficking offence. The man has not yet been charged, and his identity has not been revealed pending further investigations.

Qawra: A Hotspot for Police Activity

Qawra, known for its vibrant nightlife and tourist attractions, has seen an increase in police activity in recent months. The area, located in the northern region of Malta, has become a focal point for drug-related offences, with police regularly conducting operations to disrupt the flow of illegal substances.

Inspector Joseph Borg, spokesperson for the Malta Police Force, commented on the latest incident: “We are committed to maintaining the safety and security of all those who live, work, and visit Qawra. Operations like these send a clear message to those involved in drug trafficking – we will not tolerate this activity in our communities.”

Community Reaction and Support for Police Efforts

Local residents and business owners in Qawra have expressed their support for the police’s efforts to combat drug-related crime. Many have taken to social media to praise the officers involved in the operation, with some calling for even stricter measures to be taken against drug dealers.

Mario Debono, owner of a popular café on Qawra’s main street, told Hot Malta, “We’ve seen an increase in police presence in the area, and it’s great to see them taking a stand against drug trafficking. It’s important for our community, especially with the tourist season approaching.”

The arrested man is expected to appear in court in the coming days, where he will be formally charged. The investigation is ongoing, and police are appealing to anyone with information regarding this or other drug-related activities to come forward.
