Fire Gutted Mellieħa Minibus: Owner’s Race Against Time

In the quiet hours of Tuesday morning, a blaze engulfed a minibus parked on Triq il-Kuncizzjoni, Mellieħa, leaving it a smoldering shell. The fire, which started around 3 AM, was extinguished by the Fire Rescue Service, but not before causing significant damage.

Owner’s Race Against Time

The minibus, owned by 45-year-old Mellieħa resident, Joseph Xuereb, was his livelihood. “I’ve been driving this minibus for over a decade,” he said, standing beside the charred vehicle, “It’s not just a minibus, it’s my bread and butter.” Xuereb had been using it for local tours, ferrying tourists from their hotels to the beaches and historical sites Mellieħa is famous for.

Xuereb is now in a race against time to get his minibus back on the road. “Tourist season is in full swing,” he said, “I can’t afford to be off the road for long.” He’s hoping to have the minibus repaired and back in service within the next two weeks.

Cause of the Fire Still Unknown

The cause of the fire is still unknown. Inspector Mario Bugeja from the Fire Rescue Service told Hot Malta, “We’re treating this as a case of suspected arson, but we’re keeping an open mind.” Investigations are ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the police.

Impact on Mellieħa’s Tourism

Mellieħa’s tourism industry is thriving this summer, with hotels and restaurants reporting high occupancy rates. The fire hasn’t dampened spirits, but it has raised concerns. Mellieħa Local Council’s Mayor, Deo Debattista, said, “We’re monitoring the situation closely. We want to ensure the safety of our residents and tourists alike.”

The council is working with the police and Xuereb to ensure the minibus is back on the road as soon as possible. “Tourists come here for the beaches and the history,” Debattista said, “We need to keep our transport services running smoothly.”

Xuereb, for his part, is determined to get back on the road. “I’ve got a family to feed,” he said, “I can’t let this setback beat me.” He’s already in touch with mechanics and insurance companies, hoping to get the minibus back in service soon.

As for the cause of the fire, the police are urging anyone with information to come forward. “Even the smallest detail could help,” Inspector Bugeja said, “We need the public’s help to solve this.”
