Miraculous Escape: Driver Rescued from Burning Car on Triq Il-Kuncizzjoni
Flames and Fear: Motorist’s Miraculous Escape on Triq Il-Kuncizzjoni
Imagine, if you will, the quiet stretch of Triq Il-Kuncizzjoni, a road that snakes through the heart of Malta’s rural scene. It’s a typical Tuesday evening, the sun dipping low, casting long shadows over the verdant fields. Suddenly, the peaceful scene is shattered by the screech of tires, the crunch of metal, and the whoosh of flames. A car has crashed and burst into an inferno, its driver trapped inside.
Rescue Mission on Triq Il-Kuncizzjoni
Eyewitnesses watched in horror as the car, a silver Ford Focus, wrapped itself around a sturdy olive tree. The impact was enough to crumple the bonnet like aluminum foil, and within seconds, the first lick of flame appeared. The driver, a 35-year-old man from nearby Żebbuġ, was trapped, his legs pinned beneath the dashboard.
The first responder on the scene was Joseph Xuereb, a local farmer who was out tending his crops. “I saw the smoke and heard the screaming,” he recalls. “I dropped everything and ran. I couldn’t just stand there and watch.” Xuereb, along with a few other passersby, managed to wrench open the driver’s door, but the flames were spreading fast, and the heat was intense.
Luckily, the Żebbuġ Volunteer Corps were quick to arrive, their sirens slicing through the evening air. Firefighters battled the blaze, their hoses arching like rainbows in the twilight, while paramedics worked to free the trapped motorist. It took them 20 minutes, but finally, they pulled him clear, his legs badly injured but his life saved.
Investigating the Cause
The car was later towed away, its charred remains a stark reminder of the evening’s drama. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, but early indications suggest it may have been a case of speeding combined with distracted driving. “We’re seeing more and more incidents like this,” says Inspector Mario Azzopardi of the Żebbuġ Police Station. “People think they can multitask behind the wheel, but it’s a recipe for disaster.”
In the coming days, police will be appealing for any witnesses to come forward. They’re particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the silver Ford Focus in the moments leading up to the crash.
Community Response and Recovery
The motorist, who has asked not to be named, is currently recovering in Mater Dei Hospital. His family has been inundated with messages of support from the local community. “We’re so grateful to everyone who helped,” his sister says. “From the farmers who stopped to help, to the firefighters and paramedics who saved his life, we can’t thank them enough.”
Meanwhile, the olive tree that stopped the car in its tracks has become something of a local landmark. Villagers have been leaving flowers and messages of support at its base, turning it into a makeshift shrine. “It’s a bit of a miracle, really,” says Xuereb. “That tree saved that man’s life.”
