Two Years of Melodious Magic: Celebrating Opera Nova Project

Imagine, if you will, the cobblestone streets of Valletta, Malta’s capital city, echoing not with the humdrum of daily life, but with the soaring melodies of opera. This was the reality two years ago when the Opera Nova Project first took to the stage, and it’s a reality that continues to this day.

From Concept to Reality

The Opera Nova Project was born out of a desire to bring the grandeur of opera to the people of Malta. Founded by local entrepreneur and opera enthusiast, Joseph Borg, the project aimed to make opera accessible and engaging for a modern audience. “I wanted to break down the barriers that often surround opera,” Borg explains, “to show that it’s not just for the elite, but for everyone to enjoy.”

The first performance, held in the historic St. John’s Co-Cathedral, was a resounding success. The unique blend of traditional opera arias and modern staging captivated audiences, leaving them eager for more. Since then, the project has gone from strength to strength, staging productions in various locations around Malta, from the ancient streets of Mdina to the contemporary Spazju Kreattiv theatre.

Opera in Unexpected Places

One of the project’s most innovative aspects is its use of unique and unexpected venues. Last year’s performance of ‘La Traviata’ in the courtyard of the Malta National Museum of Archaeology is a case in point. The open-air setting, with the ancient ruins of the Roman Villa Romana as a backdrop, added a layer of magic to the already enchanting opera.

Opera Nova Project’s artistic director, Maria Cassar, believes that these unique settings enhance the audience’s experience. “The combination of the music and the setting creates something truly special,” she says. “It’s not just about the performance, but about the whole atmosphere we create.”

Educating Through Entertainment

Education is another key aspect of the Opera Nova Project. The project offers workshops and masterclasses, giving aspiring opera singers the chance to learn from professional performers. They also provide educational resources for schools, aiming to introduce young people to the world of opera.

Borg believes that this educational aspect is crucial. “We want to inspire the next generation of opera lovers and performers,” he says. “By making opera accessible and engaging, we hope to foster a love for it that will last a lifetime.”

As the Opera Nova Project looks ahead to its third year, it’s clear that its impact on Malta’s cultural scene is significant. From its innovative stagings to its educational initiatives, the project is breathing new life into the world of opera, one melodious note at a time.

So, if you find yourself in Malta in the coming months, keep an ear out for the sweet sound of opera. You never know where you might find it – but you can be sure it will be a performance to remember.
