Opera Nova Project Celebrates Two Years of Melodious Magic
Two Years of Melodious Magic: A Celebration of Opera Nova Project
Imagine, if you will, the grand Teatru Manoel in Valletta, its historic walls echoing not with the humdrum of daily life, but with the soaring notes of arias and the thunderous applause of an enraptured audience. This was the scene two years ago, as the Opera Nova Project took its first bow, marking the beginning of a new era for opera in Malta.
Birth of an Opera Revolution
The Opera Nova Project was born out of a desire to breathe new life into Malta’s opera scene. Founded by local entrepreneur and opera enthusiast, Marcus Kalemmer, the project set out to make opera more accessible and engaging for a new generation of audiences.
“We wanted to strip away the stuffiness and elitism often associated with opera,” says Kalemmer. “We wanted to create an experience that was inclusive, exciting, and above all, enjoyable.”
From Concept to Stage
The project’s first production, The Barber of Seville, was a resounding success. Staged at the Teatru Manoel, it drew in crowds with its innovative set design, dynamic storytelling, and a cast that included both established and up-and-coming local talent.
Since then, Opera Nova has gone on to produce a string of critically acclaimed performances, from La Bohème to The Magic Flute, each one pushing the boundaries of what opera can be in the 21st century.
Opera for Everyone
But Opera Nova’s impact extends beyond the stage. The project has been instrumental in nurturing local talent, providing opportunities for singers, musicians, and technicians to hone their craft. It has also reached out to schools and communities, introducing children and young people to the magic of opera through workshops and performances.
One such initiative, the ‘Opera in Schools’ program, has seen Opera Nova artists performing excerpts from famous operas in schools across Malta and Gozo. “We want to inspire a love for opera in the next generation,” says Kalemmer. “And the best way to do that is to bring it to them, to make it a part of their world.”
Two years in, the Opera Nova Project has proven that opera is not just for the elite, but for everyone. It has shown that opera can be exciting, relevant, and deeply moving. And it has given Malta a reason to sing.
As we look to the future, Kalemmer is coy about what’s next for Opera Nova. “All I can say is, watch this space. We’ve got some incredible things planned.”
