Perugia Horror: 7 Injured as Driver Rams Crowd
Panic in Piazza: Seven Injured as Driver Plows into Crowd in Italian City
Imagine the scene at Malta’s Republic Street on a bustling Sunday afternoon. Now, picture a car accelerating into the crowd, sending people sprawling. This wasn’t Malta, but the Italian city ofugia. The question on everyone’s mind: Why?
The Incident Unfolds
At around 11 am local time, a 38-year-old man driving a Fiat Panda plowed into a crowd gathered in Piazza del Popolo, a popular square in the historic center of Perugia. The driver, a local resident, was later arrested. Seven people were injured, with two in critical condition.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as people scattered, leaving behind a chaotic scene of broken glass and twisted metal. “It was like a nightmare,” said one local shopkeeper, who wished to remain anonymous.
Motive Remains Unclear
Police have not yet released a motive for the incident. The driver, who was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, is cooperating with authorities. Early reports suggest it may have been an accident, but investigations are ongoing.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in Europe. In 2017, a similar incident in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas left 13 dead and over 100 injured. In 2019, a man drove into a crowd in the Dutch city of Utrecht, killing four and injuring many more.
Reactions and Support
Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela expressed his solidarity with the people of Perugia, tweeting, “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We stand with you in these difficult times.”
Locals in Perugia have been rallying around the victims, with many leaving flowers and messages of support at the scene. “We are a strong community,” said one resident. “We will not let this break us.”
If you’re planning to visit Perugia, the local tourism board assures that the city remains safe and open for visitors. They encourage everyone to continue supporting local businesses and tourism.
