Qantas flight diverted after man bites flight attendant
Unruly Passenger Diverts Qantas Flight to Malta
Imagine, for a moment, you’re cruising at 35,000 feet, midway through a long-haul flight from Australia to London. Suddenly, the captain’s voice crackles over the intercom, “Ladies and gentlemen, we’re making an unscheduled stop in Malta due to a passenger disturbance.” This wasn’t a hypothetical scenario for the 346 passengers on Qantas Flight 94 on the night of March 17th. It was their reality.
The Incident
According to reports, a 28-year-old man became unruly mid-flight, allegedly biting a flight attendant on the hand. The incident, which occurred around 11 pm, was serious enough for the captain to decide to divert the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to Malta International Airport. The plane touched down at 2:30 am, where the man was promptly arrested by Maltese police upon arrival.
Malta: An Unexpected Overnight Stay
For the passengers, the unexpected stopover in Malta turned into an overnight stay. They were accommodated in local hotels, with Qantas covering the costs. Some took the opportunity to explore the historic streets of Valletta, others enjoyed a late-night stroll along the Sliema promenade, or simply caught up on some sleep in their unexpected accommodation. The flight eventually resumed its journey to London the following morning, with the disruptive passenger no longer on board.
A Rare Occurrence
Incidents like this are rare, but not unheard of. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), there were 10,855 reported cases of unruly passengers in 2019, a figure that has likely been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Qantas, however, has a strong safety record and such incidents are uncommon for the airline.
Malta, on the other hand, is no stranger to unexpected visitors. From wartime evacuations to diverted cruise ships, the island has a history of rolling out the welcome mat to those who find themselves unexpectedly on its shores. This time, however, the welcome was a little more unexpected than usual.
