Three New Priests Bring Hope to Malta’s Church

New Dawn for the Church: Three Priests Ordained in Valletta

Under the resplendent dome of St. John’s Co-Cathedral, a sense of renewal filled the air as three new priests took their vows in Valletta. The ordination, a beacon of hope amidst challenging times, marked a significant milestone not just for the Church, but for Malta’s spiritual scene.

Ordination Amidst Uncertainty

The ordination of Rev. Dr. Joseph Farrugia, Rev. Dr. Joseph Azzopardi, and Rev. Dr. Mark Attard came at a time when the Church, like many institutions, grapples with uncertainty. Yet, the ceremony was a testament to resilience and faith, drawing a large congregation to the historic church in the heart of Malta’s capital.

Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna, who presided over the ceremony, echoed this sentiment. “Today, we celebrate hope,” he said, “These three men, despite the challenges, have answered the call to serve. They are a message of hope for our Church and our community.”

Local Roots, Global Call

The three new priests bring diverse backgrounds and experiences to their new roles. Rev. Dr. Farrugia, a native of Żebbuġ, brings a wealth of academic and pastoral experience to his new role. Rev. Dr. Azzopardi, from Ħamrun, has served in various parishes and has a deep understanding of Malta’s urban communities. Rev. Dr. Attard, from Żurrieq, brings a passion for youth ministry and evangelization.

Each of them, despite their unique journeys, shares a common thread – a deep commitment to serving God and the people of Malta. Their ordination is a reminder that, even in the face of global challenges, the Church remains rooted in local communities.

: A Church in Service

The ordination of these three priests is not just a personal milestone, but a collective one. It signals a Church that is committed to renewal and service, even in the face of adversity. As Archbishop Scicluna noted, “The Church is not a building, it’s not an institution. It’s people. And today, we celebrate three new people who have said yes to God’s call.”

As Malta continues to navigate through challenging times, the ordination of these three priests serves as a reminder of the Church’s enduring commitment to service and hope. It’s a message that resonates not just within the walls of St. John’s Co-Cathedral, but throughout Malta’s communities.

As the new priests embark on their journeys, one thing is clear – the Church in Malta is not just set to endure, but to thrive. And that, in itself, is a message of hope.
