Three New Priests Bring Hope to Malta’s Church

Three New Faces of Hope: Ordination in Valletta’s St. John’s Co-Cathedral

As the sun cast a golden glow over the grand architecture of Valletta’s St. John’s Co-Cathedral, three young men took their first steps into a new life. On a warm Saturday morning, the ancient stone walls of this Baroque masterpiece echoed with the voices of family, friends, and fellow Maltese as they gathered to witness the ordination of three new priests.

From Parishioners to Pastors

The three ordinands, Kevin Azzopardi, Andrew Azzopardi, and Joseph Farrugia, have been on a journey of faith that has taken them from their homes in towns like Birkirkara and Zebbug to the hallowed halls of the seminary. Now, they stand ready to serve their communities as spiritual leaders, a role that carries both immense responsibility and profound joy.

For Kevin, Andrew, and Joseph, this day marks not just the culmination of years of study and discernment, but also the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. They will now serve as priests in parishes across Malta, bringing the message of hope and love that they have received to their fellow Maltese.

Ordination: A Rite of Passage

The ordination ceremony, presided over by Archbishop Charles Scicluna, was a beautiful blend of ancient tradition and modern relevance. The cathedral, with its intricate stone carvings and stunning artworks, provided a fitting backdrop for this sacred rite of passage. The ceremony included the laying on of hands, a symbolic act that traces back to the early days of Christianity, and the presentation of the paten and chalice, symbols of the new priests’ role in the Eucharist.

But perhaps the most poignant moment came when the ordinands promised obedience to the Archbishop and his successors. It was a powerful reminder of the unity and continuity of the Church, a living institution that has been guiding Maltese souls for centuries.

: Serving the Maltese People

As the new priests step into their roles, they do so at a time when the Church faces both challenges and opportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of community and the need for spiritual sustenance, even as it has presented unique challenges for religious gatherings. But for Kevin, Andrew, and Joseph, this is not a daunting prospect, but an opportunity to serve their people in new and creative ways.

Speaking to Hot Malta, Archbishop Scicluna expressed his hope that the new priests would bring a spirit of renewal and vitality to the Church in Malta. “We need young priests who are not afraid to engage with the world, to listen to people’s stories, and to share the message of hope that is at the heart of our faith,” he said.

As the sun set over Valletta, casting its final rays on the proud faces of the newly ordained priests and their loved ones, it was clear that a new chapter was beginning. For Kevin, Andrew, and Joseph, the road ahead is filled with challenges and uncertainties, but also with hope and purpose. And for the Church in Malta, these three young men represent a message of hope, a promise of renewal, and a commitment to serving the people of this small, resilient island nation.
