Żurrieq Residents Fight Nigret High-Rise Plans

Żurrieq Residents: “Not Another High-Rise, Not on Our Watch!”

Zurrieq, Malta’s southernmost village, is no stranger to change. Its winding streets, lined with traditional Maltese houses, have seen centuries of evolution. But when news broke about Nigret development plans, residents drew a line in the sand. They’re not saying ‘no’ to progress, but they’re certainly saying ‘not like this’.

What’s the Nigret Development About?

The Nigret development, proposed by a local real estate company, envisions a 12-story high-rise apartment block overlooking the picturesque Zurrieq valley. The project promises modern living spaces, commercial outlets, and underground parking. But for many Żurrieq residents, it’s a step too far.

“We’re not against development,” says Mario Vella, a Żurrieq native and one of the leading voices against the Nigret plans. “But we want it to be in line with our village’s character, not something that sticks out like a sore thumb.”

Preserving Żurrieq’s Charm

Żurrieq’s charm lies in its rural feel, its traditional architecture, and its tight-knit community. The Nigret development, with its towering height and modern design, threatens to disrupt this equilibrium. Residents worry about increased traffic, loss of green spaces, and the potential strain on local infrastructure.

“We’ve seen what high-rises have done to other parts of Malta,” says Maria Azzopardi, another Żurrieq resident. “We don’t want that here. We want to preserve our village’s unique identity.”

Fighting Back: The Żurrieq Residents’ Campaign

Residents have formed a committee, ‘Żurrieq Wara l-Ilma’ (Żurrieq Against the Shadow), to fight the Nigret development plans. They’ve been collecting signatures, organizing public meetings, and even created a Facebook page to raise awareness. Their message is clear: they want sustainable development, not a concrete jungle.

“We’re not just saying ‘no’,” says Mario. “We’re saying ‘yes’ to development that respects our village’s heritage and environment. We want our voice to be heard, and we won’t stop until it is.”

As the battle for Żurrieq’s future continues, one thing is clear: this isn’t just about a single development. It’s about preserving Malta’s rural heart, one village at a time.
