Żurrieq Residents: “No Way” to Nigret Development
In the heart of Malta’s south, the quaint village of Żurrieq is no stranger to change. But a proposed development in Nigret, a rural area on its outskirts, has sparked a fire among residents. They’re united, vocal, and determined to stop what they see as a threat to their community’s character and environment.
From Farmland to Apartments: The Nigret Plan
At the core of the controversy is a planning application submitted by a local developer. The proposal? To transform a sprawling farmland in Nigret into a residential complex, complete with 144 apartments and a handful of shops. On paper, it promises affordable housing and new jobs. But to Żurrieq’s residents, it’s a recipe for disaster.
“This is not about NIMBYism,” says Maria Camilleri, a Żurrieq native and one of the leading voices against the development. “It’s about preserving what we have. Nigret is our green lung. It’s where our children play, where we walk our dogs, where we breathe fresh air.”
Traffic, Noise, and Loss of Green Space: Residents’ Concerns
The proposed development, residents argue, will bring a surge of traffic to Żurrieq’s already congested streets. They point to the lack of infrastructure to support such a large influx of people, from schools to healthcare facilities. Noise pollution and the loss of green space are also high on their list of concerns.
“We’re not against development,” says Joseph Xuereb, another Żurrieq resident. “But it has to be sustainable, it has to respect our environment, and it has to serve the needs of our community, not just the developer’s bottom line.”
Fighting Back: Żurrieq’s Community Response
Żurrieq’s residents have mobilized. They’ve formed a committee, ‘Żurrieq No Way’, and launched a petition that’s already gathered thousands of signatures. They’ve held public meetings, marched through Żurrieq’s streets, and even set up a camp in Nigret to raise awareness.
“We won’t give up,” says Maria, her voice echoing the determination of her fellow Żurrieq residents. “We’ll fight this until the very end. Because this is our home, our community, and we won’t let it be destroyed.”
As the planning application makes its way through the system, Żurrieq’s residents wait, watchful and united. Their message is clear: Żurrieq says ‘No Way’ to the Nigret development.
