ADPD Calls for Holistic Health Approach in Malta
ADPD’s Call: A Holistic Health Approach for Malta’s Future
Picture this: A bustling morning at Mater Dei Hospital, Malta’s primary healthcare facility. Doctors and nurses rush between wards, patients wait in the outpatient clinic, and the hum of activity is a testament to our island’s healthcare system in full swing. But what if there was a better way to manage our health, one that goes beyond treating illness and focuses on prevention and well-being? This is the vision of the Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) Party, which recently called for a broad approach to health in Malta.
What Does Holistic Health Mean?
Holistic health isn’t just about treating the symptoms of an illness; it’s about looking at the whole person – body, mind, and spirit. It’s about prevention, early intervention, and promoting overall well-being. For ADPD, this means a shift in our healthcare system, one that prioritizes mental health, public health, and community well-being alongside traditional medical care.
ADPD’s Proposals for a Healthier Malta
ADPD’s proposals are wide-ranging and ambitious. They include:
- Mental Health Reform: ADPD wants to see mental health services integrated into our healthcare system, with more resources for prevention, early intervention, and community support. They propose a mental health strategy that focuses on schools, workplaces, and communities.
- Public Health Promotion: ADPD calls for a public health strategy that focuses on prevention, health education, and community engagement. This could include initiatives like health promotion campaigns, community health events, and school health programs.
- Community Well-being: ADPD wants to see more investment in community spaces and initiatives that promote well-being. This could include green spaces, community centers, and sports facilities. They also propose a ‘Well-being Malta’ strategy that would coordinate these efforts across the island.
These proposals are ambitious, but they’re also practical. They’re about making our healthcare system work better for us, and about creating a healthier, happier Malta. As ADPD’s spokesperson for health, Dr. Gordon Debono, puts it, “We need to move away from a sick care system to a health care system.”
But how do we get there? That’s the million euro question. It’s going to take political will, public engagement, and a lot of hard work. But it’s also going to take us all – from policymakers to patients – thinking differently about health and well-being. It’s about seeing health not just as the absence of illness, but as a positive state of being. It’s about seeing health not just as an individual responsibility, but as a collective one. It’s about seeing health not just as a destination, but as a journey.
