Art Dubai Opens Amidst Regional War
Art in Turmoil: Dubai’s Art Fair Opens Amidst Regional Conflict
In the heart of Dubai, the sprawling halls of Madinat Jumeirah are abuzz with activity. Art handlers meticulously hang paintings, while sculptors put the final touches on their pieces. It’s the eve of Art Dubai, the Middle East’s leading art fair, and despite the regional war raging in Yemen, the show goes on.
Art Dubai, now in its 15th edition, is a beacon of cultural resilience amidst political turmoil. This year, it’s hosting over 100 galleries from 47 countries, including Malta’s own Stella Doldinger from The Mill, who’s showcasing her intricate, abstract paintings.
Malta’s Artistic Presence in Dubai
Malta’s art scene is no stranger to international stages. With its rich history and vibrant contemporary scene, our islands have been making waves in global art circles. This year, Malta’s participation at Art Dubai is supported by Arts Council Malta, with Doldinger’s work representing our cultural heritage and unique artistic voice.
“Art transcends borders and politics,” says Doldinger, who’s been preparing for the fair in her studio in Birkirkara. “It’s a universal language that brings people together, even in times of conflict.”
Art as a Unifier, Not a Divisor
Art Dubai’s organizers echo this sentiment. “Art has the power to connect people and cultures, even in challenging times,” says a spokesperson. “We’re committed to providing a platform for artistic expression and dialogue, regardless of the political climate.”
This year’s fair features a special section dedicated to art from conflict zones, including works from Yemen. It’s a stark reminder of the reality outside the fair’s opulent halls, and a testament to the artists’ resilience and determination to create.
Back in Malta, local art enthusiasts can catch a glimpse of the action through live streams and social media updates. It’s a reminder that while our island may be small, our artistic reach is global.
“Malta’s art scene is thriving, and it’s exciting to see our artists making waves internationally,” says Dr. Hilda A. Camilleri, Director of Arts Council Malta. “Art Dubai is an excellent platform for our artists to showcase their work and connect with the international art community.”
As the fair opens its doors to the public, the question remains: can art truly bridge the divides created by conflict? Perhaps not entirely, but it can certainly offer a moment of respite, a shared human experience, and a glimpse into the beauty that exists even amidst turmoil.
