Car Overturns on Mdina Road: Motorist Hospitalised

Early this morning, the usually tranquil Mdina Road echoed with the screech of metal and the wail of sirens as a car overturned, leaving its driver injured. The incident, which occurred near the historic Mdina Gate, has once again highlighted the need for road safety awareness in Malta’s bustling streets.

Scene of the Accident

The car, a silver Ford Focus, was found on its roof, blocking part of the road leading to the ancient walled city. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle lose control at high speed before flipping over. “It happened so fast,” said Joseph, a local resident who was out for his morning walk. “One moment the car was speeding, the next it was upside down.”

Emergency Response

The Malta Police Force and Civil Protection Department swiftly responded to the incident. Paramedics stabilised the injured motorist, a 35-year-old man from Birkirkara, before transporting him to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment. His condition is reported to be stable but serious.

Mdina Road was temporarily closed to traffic while emergency services worked at the scene. Diversions were put in place, causing some traffic congestion in the area. Commuters are advised to check for updates before travelling through the area.

Road Safety in Malta

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety in Malta. According to the National Statistics Office, there were 1,625 road traffic accidents in 2020, resulting in 15 fatalities. Speeding, distracted driving, and not wearing seatbelts are among the leading causes of these accidents.

Local authorities have been implementing measures to improve road safety, including the installation of average speed cameras and the introduction of stricter penalties for traffic offences. However, the onus is also on drivers to adhere to traffic rules and drive responsibly.

“We need to remember that every time we get behind the wheel, we’re not just responsible for our own safety, but for the safety of everyone else on the road,” said Dr. Maria Galea, a road safety advocate. “Let’s make sure we’re doing our part to keep our roads safe.”
