Car Overturns on Mdina Road: Motorist Hospitalised
Emergency services rushed to Mdina Road early this morning after a car overturned, leaving the driver with serious injuries. The incident, which occurred near the ancient city’s historic walls, caused traffic chaos during the morning rush hour.
Scene of the Accident
The single-vehicle accident happened around 7:30 AM, with the car coming to rest on its roof near the entrance to the Silent City. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle lose control at high speed before flipping over and skidding along the tarmac. The driver, a 35-year-old man from Rabat, was extracted from the wreckage by firefighters and rushed to Mater Dei Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Traffic Chaos and Road Closure
Mdina Road was closed in both directions for several hours while emergency services attended to the incident and police investigated the cause of the crash. This led to heavy traffic build-up in the surrounding areas, with commuters reporting delays of up to an hour. Diversions were put in place via Triq l-Imqabba and Triq San Pawl il-Baħar, causing disruption to bus services and school runs.
Investigation Underway
Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Initial reports suggest that speed may have been a factor, although this has not been confirmed. Inspector Joseph Muscat from the Roads Policing Unit urged anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. “We are appealing for any information that could assist our investigation,” he said.
This is the latest in a series of serious road accidents in Malta in recent months, with campaigners calling for stricter enforcement of speed limits and improved road safety measures.
Road Safety Campaigners React
Reacting to the incident, Charles Deguara from the pressure group Road Safety Malta said, “We are deeply concerned by the number of serious accidents we’re seeing on our roads. We urge the authorities to take immediate action to improve road safety and prevent more tragedies.”
Councillor Calls for Speed Cameras
Rabat Local Councilor, Mario Vella, has called for the installation of speed cameras along Mdina Road. “We’ve been calling for these measures for years,” he said. “We hope that this latest incident will finally prompt the authorities to take action.”
Advice for Motorists
Motorists are advised to avoid the area while emergency services deal with the incident. Those planning to travel to Mdina or Rabat are urged to allow extra time for their journeys. The Malta Police Force has also reminded drivers of to speed limits and driving safely.
