Cyclist in Critical Condition After Mġarr Collision

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a horrific accident in Mġarr yesterday, where a cyclist was left grievously injured after a collision with a vehicle. The incident, which occurred around 6 pm on Triq il-Kbira, has through the close-knit community, leaving residents shaken and calling for improved road safety.

What Happened?

The cyclist, a 35-year-old man, was traveling towards Mosta when he was involved in a collision with a car. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the cyclist suffering severe injuries and being immediately transported to Mater Dei Hospital in critical condition. The driver of the car, a 45-year-old man, was also taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has information to come forward. A section of Triq il-Kbira was closed off for several hours while forensic police officers examined the scene.

Community Reacts: “Something Must Be Done”

News of the accident has sparked outrage among local residents and cyclists, who have long been calling for better road safety measures in the area. “This is not the first time something like this has happened,” said Joseph, a Mġarr resident who wished to remain anonymous. “We need more cycle lanes, better signage, and stricter enforcement of road rules. Something must be done before another tragedy occurs.”

Malta’s cycling community has also expressed its concern. “Our thoughts are with the cyclist and his family,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Cycling Federation. “This serves as a stark reminder of the dangers cyclists face on our roads. We urge the authorities to take immediate action to improve road safety for all users.”

Road Safety in Malta: A Growing Concern

According to statistics from the Malta Police Force, there were 167 road traffic accidents involving cyclists in 2020, resulting in 19 serious injuries and one fatality. These figures have been steadily increasing in recent years, reflecting the growing popularity of cycling as a mode of transport and leisure activity in Malta.

In response to these concerns, the government has announced plans to invest in a network of cycle lanes and infrastructure across the country. However, many have criticized the pace of these developments, arguing that more needs to be done to protect cyclists and other vulnerable road users.

In the meantime, cyclists and motorists are urged to exercise caution on the roads. “We all have a responsibility to share the roads safely,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Road Safety Council. “Cyclists should wear high-visibility clothing and use lights, while drivers should give cyclists plenty of space and be patient.”
