Drugs Seized, Man Arrested in St. Julian’s Roadblock

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a routine roadblock in St. Julian’s turned into a significant bust for the Maltese police. A man driving a silver Ford Focus was stopped at the checkpoint near St. George’s Bay, and a quick search of his vehicle yielded a substantial amount of illegal drugs.

The Discovery

According to a police spokesperson, officers found a large plastic bag containing what is suspected to be cannabis, hidden in the car’s boot. The bag was carefully concealed, but the keen eyes of the officers on duty spotted it during the stop. The man, a 32-year-old resident of Msida, was immediately arrested and taken into custody for further questioning.

St. Julian’s: A Popular Hotspot

St. Julian’s, a bustling town along Malta’s northeastern coast, is known for its vibrant nightlife and popular tourist spots. The roadblock was set up near the iconic St. George’s Bay, a favourite among locals and tourists alike for its sandy beaches and lively atmosphere. This latest incident serves as a reminder that even in the most popular and seemingly safe areas, illegal activities can occur.

The police have not yet released the exact quantity of drugs seized, but sources close to the investigation suggest it could be one of the larger hauls in recent months. This discovery comes on the heels of a series of successful drug busts by Maltese law enforcement, indicating a continued commitment to keeping Malta’s streets safe.

In a statement, Inspector Mario Xuereb of the Malta Police Force said, “We will not tolerate the distribution of illegal substances in our communities. Our officers are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors, and we will continue to carry out these operations to disrupt the activities of those involved in such crimes.”

What’s Next?

The arrested man is expected to appear in court in the coming days, charged with possession and trafficking of illegal drugs. The police are also investigating whether the man was acting alone or as part of a larger network. As the investigation continues, the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.

In the meantime, life in St. Julian’s continues as usual. The beaches are still filled with sunbathers, and the restaurants and bars are bustling with patrons. But the presence of the police is more visible, a reminder that the authorities are committed to maintaining the safety and security of Malta’s popular tourist spots.
