Explore Fort Bengħajsa Before Restoration
Fort Bengħajsa’s Hidden Treasures: A Sneak Peek Before Restoration
Ever wondered what lies behind the rusted cannons and crumbling walls of Fort Bengħajsa? This Sunday, you’ll get a rare chance to step back in time as the historic fort throws open its doors for an open day. But why the sudden interest in this often-overlooked fort? Well, it’s all about to change.
Fort Bengħajsa: A Brief History
Nestled on the rugged cliffs of St. Paul’s Bay, Fort Bengħajsa has stood sentinel over the Mediterranean for centuries. Built by the Knights of St. John in the 17th century, this fort has seen its fair share of history. From withstanding Ottoman sieges to serving as a British military hospital during World War II, its walls hold tales untold. Yet, time and neglect have taken their toll, leaving the fort in a state of disrepair.
Restoration: A New Lease of Life
But fear not, history buffs! The fort is set for a new lease of life. The Maltese government, in collaboration with Heritage Malta, has embarked on a restoration project that promises to breathe new life into this historic gem. The open day, scheduled for this Sunday, is your chance to explore the fort before the restoration works begin.
“This is a unique opportunity for the public to see the fort in its current state and understand the extent of the restoration work needed,” says Dr. Anthony Borg, Heritage Malta’s Senior Curator. “We want people to appreciate the history of this place and be part of its future.”
What to Expect on the Open Day
So, what can you expect on this open day? For starters, guided tours will take you through the fort’s labyrinthine corridors and chambers, offering insights into its rich history. You’ll learn about the fort’s role in Malta’s Great Siege, its use as a military hospital, and even its brief stint as a film set (yes, you read that right!)
But it’s not just about the past. The open day will also give you a sneak peek into the future. Architects and conservators will be on hand to explain the restoration plans, which include stabilizing the fort’s structure, restoring its original features, and even creating a new visitor center.
“We want Fort Bengħajsa to become a destination in its own right,” says Dr. Borg. “A place where people can learn about Malta’s history, enjoy stunning views, and maybe even have a coffee while they’re at it.”
And if you’re wondering about the fort’s future as a film set, well, that’s a possibility too. “We’re open to ideas that can help bring this fort’s history to life,” says Dr. Borg with a smile.
How to Get There
Fort Bengħajsa is located on Triq il-Fort, St. Paul’s Bay. The open day runs from 10 am to 4 pm, with the last guided tour starting at 3 pm. Entry is free, but donations are welcome to support the restoration project.
So, mark your calendars, folks! This Sunday, Fort Bengħajsa throws open its doors. It’s your chance to explore a piece of Malta’s history, understand its future, and maybe even have a hand in shaping it.
