The Fort, usually closed to the public, is opening its doors for an open day, giving locals and tourists alike a sneak peek before restoration works begin.

Built in the 17th century to protect Malta’s southern coast, Fort Bengħajsa is a testament to the Knights of St John’s defensive strategy. The open day, organised by Din l-Art Ħelwa, promises to unveil the Fort’s rich history and architecture. You’ll be able to explore its secret passageways, discover hidden chambers, and learn about its role in Malta’s military past.
Guided tours will take you through the Fort’s labyrinthine interior, explaining the strategic importance of its design. You’ll see the magazine, where gunpowder was stored, the soldiers’ quarters, and the commander’s residence. The tours will also highlight the damage caused by time and neglect, setting the stage for the upcoming restoration works.

The open day is more than just a chance to explore a historic site. It’s also a chance to understand the importance of Din l-Art Ħelwa’s restoration project. Practical Information
The open day at Fort Bengħajsa will take place on Sunday, 24th April, from 10 am to 4 pm. Guided tours will run every hour, with the last tour starting at 3 pm. The Fort is located in Dingli, just off Triq il-Kuncizzjoni. Parking is available along the road leading to the Fort.
Remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the Fort is not fully accessible and the terrain can be challenging. Also, keep in mind that the Fort is not wheelchair accessible at this time.
