FACT Founder Jesmond Pace Retires: A Media Icon Steps Down
FACT’s Founder Jesmond Pace Retires: A Chapter Closes, A Legacy Endures
In the heart of Malta’s bustling Republic Street, the iconic FACT office has been a beacon of independent journalism since 1989. Today, it’s a different story. The man who started it all, Jesmond Pace, has announced his retirement, leaving a void in Malta’s media scene.
From Humble Beginnings to Media Powerhouse
Jesmond Pace’s journey began in the late 80s, a time when Malta’s media scene was vastly different. With a small team and a big dream, he launched FACT from a modest office in Valletta. Over three decades, FACT grew into a powerhouse, known for its fearless reporting and in-depth analysis.
“I remember when we started, we had to fight for every story,” Pace recalls, sitting in his now-silent office. “But we believed in our mission – to inform, to challenge, to make a difference.”
A Legacy of Fearless Journalism
FACT’s impact on Malta’s media scene is undeniable. It broke stories that shook the nation, from corruption scandals to political intrigue. It introduced investigative journalism to Malta, setting new standards for the industry.
“Jesmond Pace has left an indelible mark on Maltese journalism,” says veteran journalist and former FACT staffer, Carmel Baldacchino. “He showed us that courage and integrity are not just words, but a way of life.”
What’s Next for FACT and Pace?
FACT will continue under new leadership, with Jesmond Pace’s daughter, Maria, at the helm. Pace himself plans to take a step back, but not out. “I’ll be around, offering advice, mentoring,” he says. “But it’s time for new voices, new ideas.”
As for Pace’s plans, he’s coy. “I’ve always been a journalist, a storyteller,” he says. “I’m not sure what’s next, but I know it’ll involve telling stories. Maybe books, maybe documentaries. We’ll see.”
In the quiet of his now-empty office, Jesmond Pace looks out at Republic Street, a symbol of Malta’s past and future. “It’s been an incredible journey,” he says. “I’m proud of what we’ve achieved, and excited for what’s next. For FACT, for Malta, and for me.”
