Fearne Fever Returns: Busuttil Eyes District 3
Streets Buzzing with Familiar Faces
Malta’s political scene is abuzz with a familiar name, and it’s not just the usual suspects. As the local elections approach, the streets of Birkirkara, particularly around Triq San Ġorġ, are echoing with chants of “Fearne, Fearne!” Yes, you heard it right. The man who once dominated Maltese politics, Simon Busuttil, is back, this time as a candidate for District 3.
From Opposition Leader to District 3 Aspirant
Simon Busuttil, the former Opposition Leader and MEP, is trading in his European Parliament badge for a local council seat. The man who once led the Nationalist Party is now vying for a spot on Birkirkara Local Council. But is this a case of political ambition or a desire to serve closer to home?
“It’s about giving back to my community,” Busuttil told Hot Malta. “I’ve lived in Birkirkara all my life. I want to ensure that our town continues to grow and develop, while maintaining its unique character.”
Fearne Fever: A Nostalgic Look Back
To understand the current buzz, let’s rewind to the early 2000s. Simon Busuttil, then a young lawyer, burst onto the political scene. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the Nationalist Party’s Secretary General in 2004. His charisma and intellect earned him the moniker “Fearne,” a nod to his youthful energy and the fear he struck in his opponents.
His rise continued, culminating in his appointment as Opposition Leader in 2013. But the political tides turned, and in 2017, he lost the general election. He stepped down as Opposition Leader and was elected as an MEP in 2019. Now, he’s back, ready to make his mark on local politics.
Can Busuttil Revive Fearne Fever?
Busuttil’s return has sparked excitement among his supporters, but also raised questions. Can he rekindle the passion and energy of his early years? Can he win over voters who have since turned to other parties or causes? And perhaps most importantly, what does his return mean for Maltese politics?
“It’s too early to say,” Busuttil admits. “But I’m ready to listen, ready to work, and ready to serve. That’s what this is about – not about me, but about Birkirkara and its people.”
if Busuttil can indeed revive the Fearne fever. But one thing’s for sure – Malta’s political scene is heating up, and Birkirkara is at the epicenter.
