Kevin Camilleri: GWU’s New General Secretary
Local Trade Unionist Kevin Camilleri Takes Helm at GWU
In the heart of Malta’s bustling Republic Street, the General Workers’ Union (GWU) headquarters buzzed with activity as members gathered to witness history. On a warm Tuesday afternoon, Kevin Camilleri was officially approved as the new General Secretary, marking a significant shift in the island’s trade union scene.
From Shop Steward to GWU’s Top Post
Camilleri’s journey to the top is a testament to the GWU’s grassroots approach. Starting as a shop steward in the retail sector, he climbed the ranks, earning respect and trust along the way. His election comes at a critical juncture, with the union facing challenges posed by an ever-evolving job market and the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’m honoured to take on this responsibility,” Camilleri said, standing before the GWU’s historic building at 127 Republic Street. “I’ve spent my entire career fighting for workers’ rights, and I’m ready to lead our union into the future.”
Camilleri’s Vision: Empowering Workers in the 21st Century
Camilleri’s vision is clear: to empower workers in Malta’s dynamic economy. He plans to us technology to engage with members, strengthen the union’s advocacy role, and foster collaboration with other stakeholders. “We need to be where our members are,” he said, “and that means embracing digital platforms and modern communication tools.”
But Camilleri also understands the importance of tradition. “GWU has a rich history, and we must preserve that. But we must also evolve. The world of work has changed, and we must change with it.”
For Malta’s workers, Camilleri’s appointment signals a new chapter. As the GWU embarks on this new journey, one thing is certain: Kevin Camilleri will be at the helm, steering the union through the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
